Mahjong tiles carry a rich symbolic vocabulary that predates the game itself. The suits, honors, and bonus tiles of a standard 144-tile set draw from Chinese cosmological and folk systems developed over centuries. Reading three tiles as an oracle - rather than playing them as a game - returns that symbolism to its divinatory roots.

The Three Tile Positions

The oracle asks you to select three tiles from the jade grid. Each position has a specific function.

The first tile reads your present energy - the quality of force or feeling that is most active in you right now. This is not what your situation looks like from outside; it is what you are actually bringing to it. A bamboo tile in this position carries the energy of flexibility and growth; the bamboo bends without breaking. A character (wan) tile here speaks to intellectual and creative energy. A circle (tong) tile connects to material and practical matters - money, resources, the physical world.

The second tile reads hidden influence - what is operating in the situation without being visible. This is the layer most people miss. The hidden influence can be a feeling you have not acknowledged, another person's energy at work, or a pattern running in the background. The honor tiles - winds and dragons - carry the strongest energies in this position. A Red Dragon tile (zhong) as hidden influence points to confidence or ambition that has not surfaced. A West Wind (xi) in this position suggests that something or someone from outside your immediate circle is affecting the situation.

The third tile reads the path forward - the direction that is most naturally open right now, not the destination you might prefer, but the channel that is actually clear.

The Symbolic Language of the Suits

Bamboo (suo) runs from 1 to 9. The 1-bamboo shows a single bird and reads as solitary clarity or beginning. The 5-bamboo is five columns - structure and foundation mid-way through a cycle. The 9-bamboo is full accumulation.

Circles (tong) also run 1 to 9, representing coins or bronze discs - the material world in motion. Characters (wan) carry the written numerals 1-9, representing human achievement and intellectual force.

Of the honor tiles: the four winds (East, South, West, North) correspond to directions and seasons; the three dragons (Green/fa, Red/zhong, White/bai) carry growth, luck, and purity respectively.
