Description
About This Widget
The spirit dial is a Victorian parlour device - a circular board with letters, numbers, YES and NO, and a pointed brass planchette that swings to indicate an answer. In 19th-century Britain and America, these devices were serious objects in serious households. The parlour seance was a social institution. The spirit board was its instrument.
What the Victorian Planchette Actually Was
The planchette - from the French "little board" - predates the Ouija board. Planchettes were small wooden or metal devices on wheels or felt-tipped legs that would move across paper or a board under the hands of participants, spelling out words or indicating letters. The Victorian spirit dial adapted this into a rotary form: a fixed dial face with a pivoting pointer, used by one or two participants to communicate with spirits or the unconscious.
The device sits at the intersection of spiritualism (the 19th-century movement that treated spirit communication as a scientifically valid phenomenon) and mechanical ingenuity. Victorian spiritualists took great care with the aesthetics and mechanics of their tools - candlelight, brass, dark wood, formal ritual. The spirit dial in this tradition was a precision instrument, not a toy.
How to Use the Dial
Frame your question clearly before you begin. Spirit dial questions work best as yes-or-no binaries: "Will this situation resolve before the end of the month?" "Is this person honest with me?" "Should I wait?" Questions that require narrative answers are better suited to other oracles.
Set the planchette in motion. Let it swing. Do not try to control where it goes. The suspension of directed intention is the whole mechanism of this type of divination - your unconscious and whatever else is participating in the moment will guide the needle.
Read where it rests: YES, NO, or - for those who sit with it longer - a word spelled out letter by letter as the planchette passes each character in turn.
When It Spells a Word
The letter-spelling mode is slower and more unusual. It works when the question is open enough that a yes or no would not suffice, or when the session has been running long enough that a more complex communication is emerging. Let the letters come without trying to anticipate them. Read the word only when the planchette has clearly stopped.
Single words that arrive from the dial tend to be significant in context. A word like WAIT, or SOON, or NAME coming through when you are asking about a specific situation - the brevity of the message is part of its nature. The dial does not deliver paragraphs.
Reading Your Answer
YES means proceed. Something is aligned, open, receptive. NO means the energy is not there, or the timing is wrong, or there is resistance you are not seeing. If the planchette swings between YES and NO without settling - that is itself an answer: the situation is genuinely undecided, or you are not yet asking the right question.
Ask the spirit dial your question now and read where the brass needle lands.
