The Book of Fates is one of the oldest oracle formats still in use. The structure is direct: a seeker holds a question, chooses or is assigned a number, and reads the passage corresponding to that number. The 300-entry format traces its roots to oracular books used in European folk practice and adapted into printed almanacs and fortune books from the 17th century onward. The same principle runs through Napoleon's Book of Fate, the Book of Destiny found in 18th-century chapbooks, and dozens of similar collections: that a number chosen with genuine intent speaks to the question that prompted it.

Why 300 Entries

The number matters. Single-card oracles (tarot, Lenormand) give you a symbol to interpret. Yes-or-no oracles give you a direction. A 300-entry book gives you language - a full passage, a specific tone, a response that can be simple or complex, direct or oblique, depending on what the question calls for.

With 300 entries, the oracle has enough resolution to produce genuinely different responses to genuinely different questions. A book with 12 entries cycles back too quickly. A book with 300 has enough range that the entry you land on starts to feel addressed to your situation, not just returned to it.

How to Choose Your Number

There are two methods, both valid. First: you hold your question clearly, close your eyes, and let a number between 1 and 300 surface without deliberation. You enter that number. The tradition says the number that arises under genuine intention is not random.

Second: you let the oracle decide. The randomized draw removes the deliberation entirely and places the choice outside your conscious preference. Some people find this method more trustworthy because it prevents them from unconsciously selecting numbers they associate with favorable outcomes.

Reading the Prophecy

Read the entry once, quickly. Then read it again slowly. The first reading gives you the surface meaning - what it literally says. The second reading is where you look for what speaks specifically to your question rather than to its general form.

Prophecies in the Book of Fates tend toward the concrete: they address action, timing, relationships, and conditions in language that is old enough to be stripped of the specificity of any single decade but still precise enough to point at something real.

If the entry feels irrelevant on first reading: before dismissing it, note what in your question it does not apply to. That negative space sometimes tells you more than the entry that would have felt comfortable.
